This unique shower design makes the most of the limited space. The pitched ceiling (because of the roof-line) needed the protection of tile as well. The design was inspired by a trip to Cancun, Mexico where a sunburst pattern adorned an ancient ruin. The rustic Bourbon Street tile from Daltile paired well with the concept. The following slide show is a start-to-finish look at one of our shower installations.
Waterproofing
Just because you are using cement backer board in your shower, does not mean it is waterproof. To prevent water from entering into the wall cavity there should be a waterproof layer below the tile surface. A vapor barrier is also recommended for steam rooms or showers with poor ventilation. Remember, moisture resistant is not water proof.
Red Guard, Laticrete 9235, Hydroban, Mercrete HydroGaurd are all pretty good. Hands down, the best waterproofing system for us is Kerdi from Schluter Systems .
This sheet applied membrane not only blocks water in a liquid state, it's the only waterproofing system that blocks water vapor, making it ideal for steam rooms and showers.
